Justice Munib Akhtar assumes charge as acting chief justice of Pakistan

Senior puisne judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Munib Akhtar, took oath as the acting chief justice of Pakistan on Monday during the absence of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. Chief Justice Afridi is scheduled to represent Pakistan at the International Legal Forum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from June 24 to 26. According to a press release issued by the apex court, the oath was administered by Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui at the Supreme Court's Karachi Registry. Following the ceremony, Justice Akhtar assumed the responsibilities of the office and will perform the duties of the chief justice until Justice Afridi returns from his foreign visit. As the senior-most judge of the apex court after the chief justice, Justice Akhtar assumed the role in accordance with established constitutional and judicial practice. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by judges of the Supreme Court and the Federal Constitutional Court, as well as senior court officials and members of the legal fraternity. The registrar of the Supreme Court conducted the proceedings. Justice Yahya Afridi became the 30th chief justice of Pakistan on October 26, 2024, after being nominated by a special 12-member parliamentary committee following the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment. His tenure as chief justice is expected to continue until October 2027.
