PMD forecasts rain, wind, thundershowers across upper, central parts from Aug 17-21

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Sunday forecasted an extended spell of rain, wind and thundershowers over the upper and central parts of the country from August 17 to 21, with occasional breaks. In a press release, PMD said that "monsoon currents were currently penetrating the northern regions of the country and were likely to persist over the coming days". PMD officials noted that while a westerly wave was expected to enter the upper parts of Pakistan from August 17, the combination of these two weather systems was expected to bring widespread precipitation to much of the country. According to PMD, in Kashmir, scattered rain accompanied by wind and thundershowers, including isolated heavy falls, was expected across Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur, beginning on the evening of August 16 and continuing through August 21 with intermittent gaps. Stay alert and follow PMD updates.#PMD #PakistanWeather pic.twitter.com/KfHIAs0yj2 — Pak Met Department محکمہ موسمیات (@pmdgov) August 16, 2026 The press release also stated that Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was also expected to see significant rainfall, with rain-wind and thundershower activity, including isolated heavy falls, forecasted for Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar and Mardan from August 17 through August 21. PMD further said that southern districts of the province, including Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Waziristan, were expected to receive rain somewhat later, on August 20 and 21. It said that Islamabad and the upper parts of Punjab would not be spared either, with rain, wind and thundershowers, including isolated heavy falls, forecasted for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali and Noorpur Thal, starting from the evening of August 16 and lasting until August 21. It added that Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and DG Khan were expected to receive rainfall on August 20 and 21. The Met Office said that in Gilgit-Baltistan, rain, wind and thundershower activity was forecast for Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar from August 18 to 21, again with occasional gaps. According to PMD, as for Sindh and Balochistan, the weather was expected to remain mainly hot and humid across most areas. However, the districts of Musakhel, Barkhan, Zhob, Kalat and Khuzdar were likely to experience rain, wind and thundershower activity from the evening of August 17 through August 20. The Met Office cautioned that heavy rainfall during this period could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore between August 17 and 20, adding that there was also a risk of landslides in the hilly and mountainous terrain of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir throughout the forecast period. The authorities advised tourists and travellers heading to these regions to remain cautious given the unsettled weather. Farmers were similarly urged to plan their crop-related activities in light of the forecast and to take appropriate care of their livestock during this time. The Met Office urged all concerned authorities to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautionary measures to avoid any untoward situation while the weather system remained active. PDMA Punjab issues monsoon alert The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab also issued a weather alert of the sixth spell of monsoon rains across the province. In an advisory, PDMA Punjab notified that rains are predicted in most districts of Punjab from the night of August 16 till August 21. The spokesperson added that from August 17 to 20, there was a risk of urban flooding due to heavy rains in the low-lying areas of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore. Jappa instructed the commissioners and deputy commissioners across the province to remain alert, adding that as per the instructions of the chief minister of Punjab, an alert had been issued to the district administration. DG PDMA Punjab further said that in view of urban flooding due to monsoon rains in big cities, the administration was on an advance alert, adding that alerts have been issued to the departments of health, irrigation, construction and communication, local government and livestock. He also said that there was a risk of flash flooding in rainwater drains. He also said that people should never go out under the open sky during thunderstorms and storms and should stay in safe places to protect themselves from lightning. DG PDMA Punjab further said that people should take special care of children and never let them go near water and electricity wires and poles in low-lying areas.
